What Does Maple Sap Do in Skincare?

Most skincare starts with water. Our Maple Energy line starts with sugar maple sap (Acer saccharum sap) instead. Here's what that means.

What maple sap is

Maple sap is the clear, watery fluid collected from sugar maple trees in early spring — before it's boiled down into syrup. It's mostly water, with naturally occurring sugars and small amounts of minerals and other compounds.

What it does in a formula

  • It's the base. Using sap in place of much of the water means the formula's foundation carries those naturally occurring components.
  • It supports a hydrated feel. Its natural sugars help hold water in the top layers of skin, similar to how other humectants work (see humectants vs emollients vs occlusives).
  • It works with the rest of the formula. In our Maple line, sap is paired with glycerin, squalane, peptides and adenosine.

Where you'll find it

Both have no added fragrance on their ingredient lists and a 12-month period after opening.

Who the Maple line suits

Dry, normal or combination skin that looks dull or less supple, especially in colder months. Very oily skin may prefer lighter textures. More on the supporting ingredients: squalane and peptides.

FAQ

What does maple sap do for skin?

In skincare, sugar maple sap is used as the base of the formula in place of much of the water; its natural sugars help skin feel hydrated.

Is maple sap the same as maple syrup?

No. Sap is the thin, watery fluid collected from the tree; syrup is sap boiled down until it's thick and concentrated.

Is maple sap good for sensitive skin?

It's a gentle base ingredient. As with any product, patch test first if your skin reacts easily.

Should I use the maple serum or the maple cream?

The serum is a lighter layer after toner; the cream is the richer final step. Dry skin often uses both.

Note: figures come from cosmetic clinical/consumer studies measuring the appearance and feel of skin. They are not medical claims; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
