What Is MSM (Dimethyl Sulfone) in Skincare?

If you read ingredient lists, you may have spotted dimethyl sulfone — also called MSM or methylsulfonylmethane — near the top of a toner. Here's what it is and why it's there.

What MSM is

  • A small, sulfur-containing compound that is also found in small amounts in nature.
  • In cosmetics, it's mainly a formulation helper. It's used as a solvent — it helps other ingredients dissolve and spread evenly through a water-based formula.
  • It's odorless and water-soluble, which makes it easy to use in toners and essences.

MSM is not the same as sulfur acne treatments

Sulfur spot treatments use elemental sulfur, which has a distinct smell and a drying effect. MSM is a different molecule. Seeing “sulfone” on a toner label doesn't mean the product is a sulfur treatment or that it will dry skin out.

MSM in skincare vs MSM supplements

You may also have seen MSM sold as a supplement. What happens when you swallow something is a separate question from what an ingredient does in a toner. This article is only about skincare.

Where you'll find it

In our Supple Preparation Unscented Toner, dimethyl sulfone is the third ingredient, alongside betaine, beta-glucan, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate and centella. As a solvent, it helps the formula's ingredients dissolve and spread evenly. (More on betaine in what is betaine in skincare?)

Is MSM suitable for sensitive skin?

MSM is generally used as a gentle, supporting ingredient. As with any new product, patch test first if your skin reacts easily — a reaction to a product can come from any ingredient or the whole formula.

FAQ

What is dimethyl sulfone in skincare?

Dimethyl sulfone, or MSM, is a small sulfur-containing compound used in cosmetics mainly as a solvent — it helps other ingredients dissolve and spread evenly in water-based formulas like toners.

Is MSM the same as sulfur?

No. Sulfur acne treatments use elemental sulfur, which smells and can be drying. MSM is a different, odorless molecule.

Is MSM good for sensitive skin?

It's typically a gentle supporting ingredient. Patch test any new product if your skin reacts easily.

Why is dimethyl sulfone in a toner?

It helps the formula's other ingredients dissolve and spread evenly, which supports a smooth, layerable texture.

Note: figures come from cosmetic clinical/consumer studies measuring the appearance and feel of skin. They are not medical claims; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
