Eye Gel vs Eye Butter: Which Fundamental Eye Care Fits You?

Eye care comes in very different textures. Our two Fundamental eye products sit at opposite ends: a light, cooling gel and a soft, rich butter. Here's how to choose.

The quick difference

  • Fundamental Eye Awakening Gel — the light one. A cooling gel with caffeine, red bean (Phaseolus angularis) extract, green tea, niacinamide and peptides including copper tripeptide-1. Absorbs quickly; easy under makeup. 35 mL.
  • Fundamental Nourishing Eye Butter — the rich one. A soft, butter-like cream with sunflower seed oil, betaine, panthenol, adenosine, niacinamide, caffeine and the same peptide group. Cushions dry-feeling skin. 20 g.

Both have a 12-month period after opening.

Choose the gel if…

  • You want a quick morning step that won't slide under concealer.
  • Your under-eyes look tired or puffy in the morning and you like a cool, fresh feel (more in does caffeine help puffy eyes?).
  • Your skin is oily or combination, or rich creams around your eyes feel heavy.

Choose the butter if…

  • The skin around your eyes feels dry or tight, especially in colder months.
  • You want a richer night step for skin that looks crepey (see caring for crepey-looking skin).
  • You prefer a cushioned finish over a fast-absorbing gel.

Or use both

Many people use the gel in the morning and the butter at night. Use about a rice-grain amount per eye and tap gently with your ring finger along the orbital bone — not right up to the lash line.

FAQ

What is the difference between an eye gel and an eye cream?

An eye gel is water-based and light, with a cooling, fast-absorbing feel. An eye cream or butter is richer and more cushioning for skin that feels dry.

Is an eye gel or eye cream better for puffy eyes?

A cooling gel suits morning puffiness and a fresh feel. For dryness, a richer cream or butter suits better.

Can I use eye gel and eye cream together?

Yes. Many people use a gel in the morning and a richer butter at night.

How much eye cream should I use?

About a grain of rice per eye, tapped on gently.
