Black Friday

How Long Will Your Skincare Last? Do the Run-Out Math Before Black Friday

A 180 mL toner used twice a day usually lasts about two to three months. A 35 mL serum used once a day lasts roughly four months, and a 60 g moisturizer used morning and night lasts about two months. Before you add anything to a Black Friday cart, work out when each product you already own will run out. It takes two minutes, and it's the easiest way to buy what you'll actually use before it expires.

How long does a typical skincare product last?

These are rough estimates for one person using a normal amount. Your own numbers depend on how generously you apply and how many layers you use (see how much skincare to use).

Product Typical amount per use Used Lasts about
Toner, 180 mL 1–1.5 mL (a palmful) Twice a day 2–3 months
Toner, 180 mL 1–1.5 mL Once a day 4–6 months
Serum, 35 mL 0.25–0.3 mL (4–6 drops) Once a day about 4 months
Serum, 50 mL 0.25–0.3 mL Twice a day about 3 months
Cream, 60 g about 0.5 g (a pea to an almond) Twice a day about 2 months
Cream, 80 g about 0.5 g Twice a day 2.5–3 months
Toner pads, 60 or 80 pads 1 pad Once a day 2–2.5 months

The 2-minute run-out formula

For anything you use daily: size ÷ amount per use ÷ uses per day = days it lasts. Then compare that with how full the bottle is now.

  1. Line up every product you use at least a few times a week.
  2. Estimate how full each one is: full, three-quarters, half, a quarter.
  3. Multiply the days from the table by that fraction. A half-full 180 mL toner used twice a day has roughly 30–45 days left.
  4. Write down the date each one runs out. That's your list, in order.

Anything that runs out between now and early spring is a reasonable thing to buy during the sale. Anything that will last into summer can wait.

Check the open-jar symbol before you buy two

Every product has two clocks. The unopened shelf life (often printed as an expiry or manufacturing date) and the period after opening, the little open-jar symbol with a number such as 6M or 12M. A backup only makes sense if you'll finish the first one and the backup inside those windows. For example, the Freshly Juiced Vitamin Skin Prep Pads have a 6-month period after opening, while the Supple Preparation Unscented Toner and Midnight Blue Calming Cream have 12 months. More on reading those dates: how long skincare lasts after opening.

What's worth a backup, and what isn't

Usually worth a backup Usually buy one at a time
Your everyday toner and moisturizer — you'll finish them Anything you haven't tried yet — buy one, patch test, then stock up
A cleanser you've used for months without problems Products with a 6-month period after opening, unless you use them daily
Minis of staples for travel and gym bags Vitamin C serums if you use them only a few times a week

A worked example

Say your routine is the Supple Preparation Unscented Toner (180 mL, twice a day), the Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop (35 mL, mornings) and the Rich Moist Soothing Cream (80 g, twice a day).

  • The toner is half full → about 5–6 weeks left. Buy one now.
  • The Vitamin Drop is three-quarters full → about 3 months left. One backup is fine if you'll open it by late winter.
  • The cream was just opened → about 2.5–3 months left. Buy one if you won't want to switch textures in spring.

That's three items, one of each, instead of a cart full of maybes.

When to buy

Many retailers now start holiday offers in early November or even late October, and final days often bring the biggest crowds and stock-outs. Make your list first, then check our Black Friday guide for offers when they're announced. Signing in and checking your shipping address ahead of time makes checkout faster.

Who this is for — and who can skip it

  • Good fit: you have a routine you like and want to buy refills without overbuying.
  • Good fit: you share products with someone and run out faster than you expect.
  • Skip the stock-up: you're still testing what works, your skin is changing (new medication, pregnancy, a new climate), or you're about to start a prescription routine. Buy one at a time instead.

FAQ

How long does a 50 mL serum last?

Used twice a day at 4–6 drops, a 50 mL serum lasts about three months. Used once a day, it lasts about five to six months.

How long does a 180 mL toner last?

About two to three months if you use a palmful twice a day, and four to six months if you use it once a day or only in the evening.

How many drops of serum should I use?

Four to six drops (about a quarter of a dropper) covers the face for most serums. If you also cover your neck, use a little more.

Should I buy backups during Black Friday?

Only of products you already use and will open within their period after opening. Work out your run-out dates first and buy for the next three to four months.

How long does unopened skincare last?

Usually two to three years from manufacture, but check the printed date. Store backups somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sun.
