How to Remove Blackheads Without Picking (Sensitive Skin Edition)

Dear, Klairs

Squeezing blackheads feels productive, but on sensitive skin it often leaves redness, marks and stretched-looking pores. Here's a calmer way to clear them over a few weeks. First, check that they are blackheads Blackheads are pores clogged with oil and dead skin; the top darkens when it meets air. The small grey dots across the nose are often sebaceous filaments, which are normal and refill within days. See blackheads vs sebaceous filaments before you start. Stop doing these Squeezing with fingers: it pushes debris deeper and can leave marks. Pore strips every week: they pull at skin and the pores refill quickly. Harsh scrubs: they irritate without reaching inside the pore. A gentle routine that works over time Cleanse gently, twice a day. A low-pH cleanser such as the Gentle Black Facial Cleanser cleans without leaving skin tight. Exfoliate inside the pore, 1–3 times a week. BHA (salicylic acid) dissolves in oil, so it reaches into pores. If BHA stings, mandelic acid is a gentler option, for example the Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water. More in AHA vs BHA and how often to exfoliate sensitive skin. Add a wash-off mask once a week if you like. The Freshly Juiced Vitamin Mask Cleanser uses PHA for gentle surface exfoliation (it contains orange peel oil, so skip it if essential oils bother you). Moisturize with a non-comedogenic formula. A light gel cream such as the Midnight Blue Clearing Water Cream, which was non-comedogenic tested (P&K Skin Research Center, 2024, 20 adults). Wear sunscreen daily, especially while you exfoliate. How long it takes Time What to expect Week 1–2 Skin adjusts to exfoliation; go slowly if it stings Week 3–6 Blackheads look smaller and fewer Ongoing Keep exfoliating 1–3 times a week to stop them coming back When to get help For stubborn blackheads, a licensed esthetician or dermatologist can do extractions safely. If you also have painful bumps or widespread breakouts, see a dermatologist. More in a clogged-pore routine for sensitive skin. FAQ Is it OK to squeeze blackheads? It's better not to. Squeezing can irritate skin and leave marks; regular gentle exfoliation clears them more safely over time. Do pore strips work? They remove the top of some blackheads, but pores refill quickly and the strips can irritate sensitive skin. How often should I use BHA for blackheads? Start once or twice a week and increase only if your skin stays comfortable. Can moisturizer cause blackheads? Heavy, pore-clogging formulas can contribute. Choose a non-comedogenic moisturizer; see what non-comedogenic means. Note: product figures come from cosmetic studies or brand-reported data as published by Dear, Klairs.
