Using too little product can leave skin tight by lunchtime. Using too much wastes product and makes layers pill. Here's a practical amount guide for each step — adjust for your skin and the season.
A simple amount guide
- Toner: enough to cover your face in a thin layer — about a coin-sized pour into your palms. Dry skin can pat in a second or third thin layer. A slightly thick toner like the Supple Preparation Unscented Toner spreads further than a watery one.
- Serum or ampoule: usually 2–4 drops, or what the label says. For example, our EGF Blue Youth Activating Drop suggests 3–4 drops.
- Eye cream or gel: about a grain of rice per eye, tapped on with your ring finger.
- Moisturizer: about a pea to an almond for the whole face, more on dry areas. A rich cream like the Rich Moist Soothing Cream goes further with a light hand.
- Sunscreen: much more than most people use — follow the amount on the label and apply it as the last morning step.
Signs you're using too little
- Skin feels tight or looks flaky within a few hours
- Makeup clings to dry patches
- You're only covering part of your face
Signs you're using too much
- Products roll into little balls (see why skincare pills)
- Skin still feels wet or sticky ten minutes later
- You're finishing products much faster than the label suggests
Tips for getting it right
- Apply to slightly damp skin so thin layers spread easily.
- Warm creams between your palms and press them in.
- Give each layer a moment before the next one.
- Adjust by season — often a little more moisturizer in winter, a little less in humid summer.

FAQ
How much moisturizer should I use on my face?
About a pea to an almond-sized amount for the whole face, a little more on dry areas. If skin feels tight within a few hours, use a bit more; if it pills or feels sticky, use less.
How many drops of serum should I use?
Usually 2–4 drops, or the amount on the label. Thin serums spread easily, so more isn't better.
How much toner should I use?
Enough to cover your face in a thin layer. Dry or dehydrated skin can pat in two or three thin layers instead of one heavy one.
Why does my skincare pill?
Often it's too much product, or layering before the previous step has settled. Use thinner layers and give each a moment.
Does using more product work better?
No. Beyond the amount skin needs, extra product mostly sits on the surface, pills or gets wasted.
