Windburn: Why Cold Wind Makes Your Cheeks Red — and How to Care for Them

A cold, windy walk can leave cheeks and nose red, tight and stinging. People call it windburn. Here's why it happens and how to care for it.

What windburn is

  • Cold, dry wind pulls moisture from skin and roughs up its outer layer.
  • Skin looks red and feels raw or tight, especially on cheeks, nose and lips.
  • Sun still reaches skin on cold days — snow and high altitude reflect it — so some “windburn” is partly sunburn.

Before you go out

  • Use a richer moisturizer as your last step before sunscreen. For dry, cold days, the Rich Moist Soothing Cream is a cushioned option (it contains a small blend of essential oils; if fragrance bothers you, use the Midnight Blue Calming Cream (no added fragrance)).
  • Wear sunscreen on exposed skin.
  • Cover up with a scarf (a soft one — rough wool can add friction).
  • Protect your lips. The Blue EGF Barrier Lip Balm is menthol-free, with shea butter and ceramide NP. It contains chamomile flower oil, so patch test if essential oils bother you.

After you come in

  1. Rinse with lukewarm, not hot, water.
  2. Pat on a hydrating toner, then a calming moisturizer.
  3. Skip exfoliants, retinoids and scrubs until skin feels normal again.
  4. Reapply lip balm before bed.

When to see a doctor

If skin blisters, turns white or waxy, feels numb, or stays painful, seek medical care — that can be frostbite, not windburn.

FAQ

What does windburn look like?

Red, tight, sometimes stinging skin on exposed areas like cheeks and nose after time in cold wind.

How do I treat windburn on my face?

Rinse with lukewarm water, apply a hydrating toner and a calming moisturizer, and skip exfoliants until skin feels normal. See a doctor for blistering or numbness.

Is windburn actually sunburn?

Partly, sometimes. Cold wind dries skin, and sun reflecting off snow can burn it too — so wear sunscreen on cold days.

How do I protect my face from cold wind?

A richer moisturizer, sunscreen, a soft scarf and lip balm before you go out.

Note: figures come from cosmetic clinical/consumer studies measuring the appearance and feel of skin. They are not medical claims; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
