Halloween Face Paint and Sensitive Skin: Patch Test First

Halloween makeup stays on for hours, often in thick layers, on skin that isn't used to it. If your skin is sensitive, a little planning this week saves a red, itchy November 1.

What to check on the label

  • It's made for skin. Choose face paint labeled for use on the face — not craft paint or markers.
  • Glitter is cosmetic-grade. Craft glitter can scratch skin and eyes.
  • Ingredients are listed. Skip products with no ingredient list, and check for fragrance if you react to it.
  • It's within date. Old face paint from last year may have changed.

Patch test this week

  1. Apply a small amount along your jawline or inner arm.
  2. Leave it on as long as you'd wear it on the night.
  3. Remove it, and watch the area for 24–48 hours.
  4. Skip anything that stings, itches or turns red. (Full patch test guide.)

Prep skin on the day

  • Cleanse gently and moisturize — paint sits better on comfortable skin.
  • Skip exfoliating acids and retinoids the night before.
  • Keep paint away from the lash line and inside the eyelids.

Take it off the same night

Don't sleep in it. See how to remove Halloween makeup without irritating your skin.

If your skin swells, blisters or your eyes become painful, remove the makeup and seek medical advice.

FAQ

Is face paint safe for sensitive skin?

Many people with sensitive skin use face paint without problems. Choose paint made for skin, check the ingredients, and patch test a few days ahead.

How do I patch test face paint?

Apply a small amount on your jaw or inner arm for as long as you'd wear it, remove it, and watch for 24–48 hours.

Can I use craft glitter on my face?

No — use cosmetic-grade glitter made for skin.

Note: figures come from cosmetic clinical/consumer studies measuring the appearance and feel of skin. They are not medical claims; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
