Switching From Western to Korean Skincare: What Changes (and What to Keep)

People who move from Western drugstore skincare to Korean skincare usually notice the same few things: lighter textures, more hydrating steps, and different ideas about what a toner is for. Here's what actually changes, and how to switch without upsetting your skin.

What changes

Area Typical Western routine Typical Korean routine
Toner Often an astringent to remove leftover oil A hydrating first step that preps skin for what comes next
Texture Fewer, richer products Several thin, watery layers, built up as needed
Steps Cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen Cleanser, toner, serum or essence, moisturizer, sunscreen
Focus Treating a concern quickly Keeping skin hydrated and calm so treatments are easier to tolerate

More on the order of steps in how to layer K-beauty skincare.

Scent can feel different

Many people notice that K-beauty products for sensitive skin smell of very little, while some Western moisturizers carry a noticeable fragrance. That varies by product, not by country, so check the full ingredient list. For Klairs, see which products have no added fragrance.

How to switch without irritation

  1. Keep your cleanser and sunscreen at first if they work for you.
  2. Add one product at a time, every 1–2 weeks, so you can tell what helps and what doesn't. A hydrating toner is the easiest first swap, for example the Supple Preparation Unscented Toner.
  3. Then add one serum for your main concern. For skin that looks stressed or red, a light first serum like the EGF Blue Youth Activating Drop.
  4. Change the moisturizer last. If skin runs warm or red, a gel cream such as the Midnight Blue Calming Cream; if it runs dry, a richer cream.
  5. Patch test each new product before using it on your whole face.

What to keep from your old routine

  • A sunscreen you'll actually wear every day.
  • Any prescription treatment, used as directed by your prescriber.
  • Products your skin has done well with for a long time. A routine doesn't need to be all one style.

Why gentle formulas are such a big part of K-beauty: why K-beauty leads gentle skincare.

FAQ

Do I need ten steps to do Korean skincare?

No. Cleanser, toner, one serum, moisturizer and sunscreen is a complete routine. Extra steps are optional.

Why does my Korean toner feel like water?

Hydrating toners are meant to add water and prep skin, not to strip oil, so a thin, watery texture is normal.

How long until I see a difference after switching?

Give each new product a few weeks. Skin often feels more comfortable sooner, but changes in how it looks take longer.

Can I mix Western and Korean products?

Yes. Layer from thinnest to thickest and introduce new products one at a time.

Note: product figures come from cosmetic studies or brand-reported data as published by Dear, Klairs. They describe how skin looks and feels; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
