“Hypoallergenic” on Skincare Labels: What It Means (and Doesn’t)

Dear, Klairs

"Hypoallergenic" sounds like a guarantee that a product won't cause a reaction. On cosmetics in the US, it isn't. Here's what the word means, what it doesn't, and what to look at instead. There's no official definition The FDA has no federal standard or definition for "hypoallergenic" on cosmetics. A brand can use the word based on its own testing, or simply its own judgment. It suggests the product is less likely to cause a reaction, but it doesn't promise anything, and it doesn't tell you how it was tested. What's more useful to check Check Why it helps The full ingredient list Lets you avoid ingredients you already know bother you Fragrance and essential oils Fragrance is one of the most common cosmetic triggers Named tests on the finished product e.g. a primary skin irritation test or a sensitive-skin test, with study size Your own patch test The only test that uses your skin Related label terms Dermatologist tested: a dermatologist was involved in testing, but the claim doesn't say what was tested or the result. See what dermatologist tested actually means. Non-comedogenic: tested or formulated to be less likely to clog pores. See what non-comedogenic means. Unscented vs fragrance-free: these are not the same. See unscented vs fragrance-free. How to patch test Apply a small amount to the same small area, such as the side of the neck or behind the ear, once or twice a day for several days. If there's no redness, itching or bumps, try it on a small area of your face. Full steps in how to patch test skincare. FAQ Does hypoallergenic mean I can't be allergic to it? No. Anyone can react to almost any ingredient. "Hypoallergenic" only suggests a lower likelihood. Is hypoallergenic the same as fragrance-free? No. A product can be called hypoallergenic and still contain fragrance. Check the ingredient list. Who decides if a product is hypoallergenic? In the US, the brand does. There's no required test or approval for the word on cosmetics. What should I do if a product irritates my skin? Stop using it, rinse with lukewarm water, and keep the routine simple until skin settles. If the reaction is severe or doesn't improve, see a healthcare provider. Note: product figures come from cosmetic studies or brand-reported data as published by Dear, Klairs. They describe how skin looks and feels; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
