Is Rich Moist Soothing Cream Right for You? Who It’s For — and Who Should Skip It

We’d rather you buy the right moisturizer than the wrong one. So here’s an honest look at the Rich Moist Soothing Cream: who it really suits, who should skip it, and one detail on the ingredient list that matters for some people.

What it is, in one minute

  • A rich, comforting cream for skin that feels dry or tight — richer than a gel cream, lighter than a balm.
  • What’s inside: ceramide NP, beta-glucan, centella asiatica and sodium hyaluronate, with shea butter and jojoba oil for cushion.
  • One honest note: the ingredient list also includes a small blend of plant essential oils — lemon peel, orange peel, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang and eucalyptus. That matters if you avoid fragrance (more below).

It’s a good fit if…

  • Your skin feels dry, tight or rough, especially in colder months or after cleansing.
  • You want long-lasting moisture from one cream, not a stack of products.
  • You’re fine with essential oils and don’t react to fragrance.
  • You have normal-to-dry or combination-dry skin and want a cream that also helps with water loss.

The moisture claim is measured. In a dermatologist-led study (n=21), skin hydration rose significantly after a single use and stayed higher for 24 hours. After four weeks, skin moisture was up, oiliness was down, and water loss through the skin (TEWL) decreased significantly, with no adverse reactions reported:

Skip it — or choose something else — if…

  • You avoid fragrance or essential oils. This cream isn’t fragrance-free — it contains essential oils, including citrus peel and lavender. If fragrance has irritated your skin before, choose a moisturizer with no added fragrance or essential oils on its ingredient list — for example the Midnight Blue Calming Cream (lighter, so very dry skin may want two thin layers). (Why the label matters: unscented vs. fragrance-free.)
  • Your skin is very oily. It’s a rich texture. Oily skin may prefer a gel cream — see gel cream vs. rich cream.
  • Your main concern is redness or flushing. It’s built for moisture. For a lightweight calming step, the Midnight Blue Calming Cream is the better match.
  • You want a treatment for eczema or another skin condition. It’s a cosmetic moisturizer. Persistent dryness, cracking or itching is a reason to see a dermatologist.

How to use it

  • Apply as the last step of your routine, morning and night, after toner and serum.
  • In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
  • Extra dry nights: a slightly thicker layer on dry patches.
  • New to it? Patch test along the jawline for a few days — especially if you’re sensitive to fragrance.

FAQ

Is Rich Moist Soothing Cream fragrance-free?

No. Its ingredient list includes a small blend of plant essential oils (lemon peel, orange peel, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang and eucalyptus). If you avoid fragrance, choose a moisturizer with no added fragrance or essential oils on its ingredient list.

Is it good for dry skin?

Yes — that’s who it’s made for. In testing, hydration stayed significantly higher for 24 hours after a single use.

Will it feel heavy on oily skin?

It might. It’s a rich texture. Oily skin often prefers a lighter gel cream.

Can I use it with retinol or exfoliating acids?

Yes, as a moisturizing final step — unless your skin is also reacting to fragrance. If skin stings, pause the actives for a few days.

What’s the difference from Rich Moist Barrier Capsule Cream?

Both target dryness. The Barrier Capsule Cream is a separate formula built around ceramide capsules and rice-derived ingredients. If you’re choosing between them because of fragrance, check the full ingredient list on the package before you buy.

Who should avoid it?

Anyone sensitive to fragrance, essential oils or citrus should skip it or patch test carefully.

Note: figures come from cosmetic clinical/consumer studies measuring the appearance and feel of skin. They are not medical claims; individual results vary; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always patch test.
